“Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it?”  It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth.  Yet when the seed is sown, it grows up and becomes greater than all…. Mark 4:30-32

ESPN says that Michael Jordan is the “greatest”, and many famous people agree. But God says:

  1. Greatness is yours for the taking.  The seed is the smallest…and becomes the “greatest”.  Greatness is your potential!! What is the seed?  For my message, the seed is YOU; (your Person, your Purpose or even just your current Project).  Whatever opportunity God is giving you, right now. What one talent has been given to you?  What circumstance are you in, right now?  Take that, no matter how small it is, and plant it!  Invest in it!  This is your act of faith, and it is God’s job to make it grow.  This is a promise from God.

    1. Support for this principle:

      1. “ to those who use well what they are given, even more will be given…” Mathew 25:29

      2. “still other seed fell on good soil and produced a crop – a hundred fold, and some sixty, and some thirty…” Mathew 13:8

      3. “I will open the windows of heaven for you.  I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in!  Try it!  Put me to the test!”  Malachi 3:10

  2. HOW DO YOU DO THIS?….Before the seed goes from smallest to greatest, it has to be planted.  It has to be surrendered to God.  It has to be buried, with full faith in God to turn it into something great.  How do we plant?

    1. Plant your whole life in God – “Take your everyday ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going to work and walking around life—and place it before God as an offering.  Embracing what God does for you, is the best thing you can do for him.” Romans 12:1.

    2.  Plant the word of God in your brain. (every day)

      1. “blessed is the man who meditates on the word of God day and night…he is like a tree plantedeverything he does prospers…”. Psalms 1 (paraphrased and emphasis is mine)

    3. Hide from distractions :  the seed is buried…isolated from distractions of the world.

      1. Distractions of life in America, are not always bad…unless they distract us from our purpose. Music, movies, kid activities, leisure activities, social media, entertainment, work; all can be good things but they can distract us from our (Person, or Purpose, or current Project); if we are not careful.

        1. In another parable Jesus explains that we are not as fruitful when we don’t eliminate distractions.

          1. “…the seed falling among thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.”  Mathew13:22

    1. Apply Faith – When you Plant, you give up control.  You voluntarily place the future, (of your Person, Purpose, Project) in the hands of God.

      1. “without faith it’s impossible to please God.”  Hebrews 11:6

      2. “…your faith has healed you.” (Multiple verses)

      3. “you have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities…”. Mathew 25:23

Planting means – committing, full devotion of your life to God, then isolating your Person, Purpose, Project in him.  Then in faith, allowing him to let it grow into greatness!!

You want Greatness?  Plant your seed!

THAT….is what Jesus says the Kingdom of God is like….
